What is a doula?

A doula is a birth companion who provides continuous support during pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum.

Doulas offers physical support such as massage, rebozo techniques and counter pressure. They can help create a calming environment. Doulas offer emotional support by empowering the birthing person, encouraging, and helping them understand situations. Doulas can share information with their clients and can share information on medical options and procedures. Doulas can suggest birthing techniques including positions, movement, relaxation techniques and more.

Although a doula will not speak to a care provider on your behalf, a doula can help advocate for you by encouraging you to ask questions and encourage you to ask for what you want.
